Redemption at Point of Sale (POS)
This is the most traditional form of redemption, occurring in a physical store. When you are ready to pay, you present the physical card or a digital barcode on your phone to the cashier.
Technical Tip: When the cashier swipes or scans your card, the POS terminal communicates with the issuer's server to verify the balance and "earmark" the funds for your purchase. Once the transaction is finalized, the server deducts the amount from the card's stored value.
Online Redemption Portals
Many major retailers (like Amazon, Apple, or Google Play) don't require you to use the gift card at the moment of purchase. Instead, you "redeem" the card to your account balance first. This converts the gift card into "store credit" that stays in your account indefinitely (or according to store terms).
- Step 1: Log in to your account on the retailer's website or app.
- Step 2: Find the "Redeem" or "Add Gift Card" section.
- Step 3: Enter the unique code and PIN.
- Step 4: Confirm that the balance has been added to your "Store Credit" or "Gift Balance."
Mobile Wallet Redemption
Digital gift cards can often be added to mobile wallets like Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. This doesn't necessarily "redeem" the value to an account balance, but it stores the card's data (including the barcode) in a convenient, easily accessible place on your phone.
To do this, look for an "Add to Apple Wallet" or "Add to Google Wallet" button in the email containing your digital gift card. Once added, you can simply open the wallet at the store and scan your phone at the register.
PIN-Based Redemption
Most gift cards have a security PIN (Personal Identification Number). This is often a 4- to 8-digit number hidden under a scratch-off panel. You will almost always need this PIN for online redemption or for checking your balance over the phone. If the PIN is scratched off or illegible when you receive the card, do not attempt to use it; contact the retailer immediately as the card may have been tampered with.
International Redemption Issues
One of the most common points of confusion is using a gift card in a different country than where it was purchased. In most cases, gift cards are region-locked. A gift card purchased in US Dollars typically cannot be used in a store that operates in Euros or British Pounds. This applies to both physical stores and online platforms like the PlayStation Store or Amazon. Always check the region of the card before attempting redemption.
Partial Redemption and Residual Value
You do not have to spend the entire balance of a gift card at once. If you use $10 of a $25 card, the remaining $15 stays on the card (or in your account). This is known as partial redemption. It's a good practice to keep the physical card until you are 100% sure the balance is zero, and as mentioned in our Use Guide, keep it even then in case of returns.
